Harry and Sigmund Weis founded Weis Markets in 1912 when they opened a small neighborhood store known as Weis Pure Foods on Market Street in Sunbury, Pennsylvania. Today, Harry’s grandson, Jonathan oversees a company with stores in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, and West Virginia. Built on self-reliance, we process our own milk and use the excess butterfat to make our Weis Quality Ice Cream – 60 flavors and growing! We are also proud to support local farmers. In Pennsylvania alone, we annually buy more than 20 million pounds of locally grown produce and we also purchase local produce in all of the states where we have stores. We are a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Green Chill program. Throughout our company, we are installing energy-efficient equipment and systems in our stores. We are also long-time proponents of recycling. Since 2008, we’ve reduced our overall greenhouse emissions by 27 percent. In 2019, we diverted 38,950 tons of waste from landfills (nearly three times the weight of the Brooklyn Bridge). This total includes: 28,651 tons of recycled cardboard and paper and 897 tons of recycled plastic bags.
